Sandymount beach family photoshoot – Dublin
A sweet summer afternoon by the sea
It was a warm and breezy afternoon when I met this lovely family just beside the iconic little ice cream shop, Scoop Dessert Parlour, in Sandymount. As Mama adjusted the hairstyles of her two little girls, aged 3 and 4, we took a moment to chat and get to know each other. The girls were already full of energy and curiosity, a sure sign this would be a fun Sandymount beach family photoshoot!
We began our adventure right at the ice cream stand. The girls tiptoed to peek into the display, eyes wide with wonder as they picked their favourite flavours: colourful, rainbow scoops that reminded them of unicorn ice cream. The whole family joined in, choosing their toppings and enjoying this classic summer treat together. And just like that, the documentary part of the session had begun, joyful, unposed, and relaxed.
Barefoot freedom and beach adventures
From the ice cream shop, we wandered straight onto the beach. The shoes came off within seconds, and those little feet ran eagerly across the sand. I followed with my camera, capturing the freedom and playfulness that only a summer afternoon can bring.
The youngest quickly got her dress soaked and sandy as she jumped into puddles, adding to the ice cream stain (oops), and no one minded. That’s the beauty of childhood, and one of the reasons why I love documentary photography. There’s no need to “behave” for the camera. In fact, I believe that children should be allowed to be fully themselves — messy, joyful, curious — because that’s how they learn, and those are the memories worth keeping.

Exploring the little island at low tide
As the tide was low, I suggested we walk together to the small sandbar just off the main beach — a magical spot dotted with tall grasses and perfectly shaped seashells. The walk became a real adventure for the girls. They giggled, asked questions, and collected treasures along the way, filling their pockets with shells as if on a mini treasure hunt. We met a tiny crab along the way, who the girls named Mr Pinchy.
Their parents loved seeing them so happy and carefree. These simple shared experiences — walking together, discovering nature, laughing — are the kind of memories that stick with us, long after the summer ends.
Capturing connection with simple prompts
Once we reached the island, I gently guided the family into a few natural interactions. I never ask for stiff posing, but I do offer easy prompts that spark real connection: a tickle, a race, a hug, a shared secret. That’s where the magic happens.
They played together, snuggled, and at one point, Mama and Papa shared a quiet moment while the girls explored nearby. These couple photos — soft, romantic, honest — are always something I love to include. (You can read more about why I always offer romantic couple shots during family sessions right here).

Heading home with salty smiles and full hearts
As we made our way back to the car, the youngest — exhausted from all the fun — curled up in her Mama’s arms and fell asleep. It was the perfect ending to a simple, magical afternoon. No fancy props, no forced smiles. Just a real family enjoying their time together by the sea.
And now, they have these moments frozen in time — a colourful summer afternoon full of love, laughter, and tiny rainbow ice creams.

FAQ: Planning your family beach photoshoot in Dublin
What should we wear for a Sandymount beach family photoshoot?
Keep it simple and comfortable. Light, neutral or earthy colours work beautifully against the sand and sky. Flowy dresses, rolled-up trousers, and bare feet are perfect. Avoid large logos or very bright patterns. Read more about what to wear for a family session
What if my child gets messy or wet?
That’s part of the fun! Messy hair, sandy toes, and wet dresses are exactly what make the memories real. I encourage children to play and be free — this is their story.
What if it rains?
Light drizzle? We might still go ahead — it can actually make for beautiful, moody photos. Heavy rain? We’ll reschedule (or relocate to your home if you want to). I always keep flexibility built into my calendar for weather changes.
Can we bring snacks or toys?
Absolutely! Anything that makes your children feel happy and comfortable is welcome. Just avoid anything very colourful or branded if you don’t want it in the final photos. Here are some more tips on how to prepare your kid.
Do you offer sessions at other beaches or outdoor locations?
Yes! Dublin has many wonderful outdoor spots. I regularly shoot in parks, forests, and gardens, and I’m always happy to explore a location that’s meaningful to your family.
