How to include pets in your family photos

Pets are family

If you’ve ever been loved by a dog, had a cat sleep on your feet, or watched your child giggle at a chicken running across the garden, you know it’s true. They’re part of our daily lives, our routines, our best moments. They deserve a place in your family memories, so I really believe your pets should be in family photos

As a photographer (and a cat mama myself), I love including animals in my sessions. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of photographing not only dogs and cats, but also chickens (yes, chickens!). The bond we share with our pets is real, deep, and beautiful, and it belongs in your family album.

Make them feel safe and relaxed

The best way to get lovely, natural images of your pets in family photos is to let them be themselves. Whether it’s a dog playing fetch or a cat curling up on a child’s lap, their personalities shine when they’re comfortable. I always allow time for pets to warm up to me, and I never force any poses.

If your pet is nervous, let me know in advance—we’ll go slow and be gentle. A familiar blanket or toy can help them feel secure. And treats? Always a good idea! If your pet is very shy and prefers to stay in a bedroom for a nap, it’s ok. I can go and meet your furry baby for a few shots and then quietly leave.

Choose the right setting

Some pets do best at home where they feel safe. Others, like dogs, may enjoy an outdoor location like a park. If we’re planning a session at home, it’s easy to include your pets naturally, on the couch, by the window, or wherever they love to nap.

If we’re heading outdoors, I’ll help you choose a quiet and pet-friendly location. My sessions are very relaxed, and that includes time for letting your dog sniff around or take a break.

Embrace the chaos (and the fun!)

Pets always bring spontaneity and fun to a session. Maybe your dog will jump up at the wrong moment, or your cat will walk across someone’s head. It’s all part of the charm. These moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most later, because they’re real and it makes their personality shine.

I love creating space for these little surprises in your session. They remind us that life is messy, funny, and so worth remembering.

More than just a photo, a keepsake

Including pets in family photos is about honoring their place in your life. Some of the animals I’ve photographed are no longer with us, but their images live on, and they’re treasured deeply. I know how much it means, because I feel the same about my own. At home, we have little albums with photos of beloved cats that are no longer with us, and they mean the world to us.

Years from now, you and your kids will look at these photos and smile, remembering how your pup always stole the spotlight or how your old cat insisted on being in every shot. These are the memories that matter.
