Family Photography Session in Memorial Gardens near Phoenix Park, Dublin
Hot drinks, cool air, and warm memories: winter sessions in Dublin
I love outdoors family sessions on a crisp winter morning! They are so special, and you can make it a real treat by bringing in a cup of your favorite hot drink to enjoy while walking.
As a Dublin family photographer who loves outdoor sessions year-round, I had the pleasure of photographing a delightful family in the serene beauty of the Irish National War Memorial Gardens, located near Dublin’s Phoenix Park. This 1.5-hour documentary-style session captured genuine moments of family bonds and joy, set against the backdrop of one of Europe’s most renowned memorial gardens. Does winter mean you can’t enjoy a walk in the park? Absolutely not, and I’m here to show you how much fun an outdoor session can be during the colder months. Keep reading if you’re considering a family photography session in the Memorial Gardens, Dublin.
The setting: Irish National War Memorial Gardens
The Irish National War Memorial Gardens, situated in Islandbridge/Kilmainham, Dublin, are dedicated to the memory of Irish soldiers who died in the First World War. The gardens are not only a place of remembrance, but also of great architectural interest and beauty. Features such as sunken rose gardens, herbaceous borders, and extensive tree planting make for an enjoyable visit in any season.
It is much smaller than the nearby Phoenix Park and it makes for a quieter option if you’re looking for the perfect place to have a photo session. If you’re planning a session in nature, a family photography session in Memorial Gardens, Dublin, is always a favorite option for many local families.

The session: capturing authentic family moments
The family consisted of a father, a mother, and their very cute, shy two-year-old son. To help the little boy feel more comfortable, we allowed him to lead the way during the session, choosing paths and activities. This approach empowered him and eased his shyness, resulting in genuine smiles and interactions.
We explored the garden’s winding paths, played hide and seek among the trees, watched canoes glide along the adjacent River Liffey, and observed local wildlife, including dogs and ducks. A short break and a few snacks provided the young boy with renewed energy, during which I captured a few intimate couple portraits of the parents. Read why I always offer couple photos during family sessions.

“Before the session, Aurélie was so flexible with dates and times, very communicative and gave so much advice on how to get the best out of the day. On the day of, she was so patient with a slightly cranky 2 year old who was not a very willing participant in the beginning of the session. She was incredibly friendly, and gave great guidance and instructions to capture lovely photos. We didn’t have to wait long to see the outcome of the day and the photos exceeded expectations, the cranky toddler was captured in such an amazing way! It was so hard to choose which photos to pick as they were all amazing! Aurélie touched base during this process to ensure we were happy with everything and when we had selected our photos; everything arrived in a timely manner and so beautifully presented. Couldn’t recommend Aurélie enough! She is amazing and so easy to work with.”

Details that make your memories timeless
When I photograph a family, I’m always drawn to the little things.
The way your toddler grabs your hand, how everyone leans in close for a hug, the glint of winter light on your child’s hair, or even the muddy shoes after a good run in the park.
In an outdoor setting, they are many ways to make those details meaningful. The soft textures of nature, the graceful light, the quiet paths… All add layers of story to your images.
These small elements create the atmosphere of your session, they bring feeling, texture, and depth. Years from now, when you look back at your images, it won’t just be the faces you remember. It’ll be the way the sun felt on your face, the crunch of leaves under little feet, the cozy way your child nestled into your coat.
These tiny, beautiful details are what will make your memories feel rich and real every time you look back.
