1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT OUTFITS

Everyone is unique and “right” will be different for each family. I know you want to look your best but hey, remember this isn’t picture day at school! It’s a documentary photo shoot of your everyday life, and it has to reflect who you are.

Coordinate, but don’t match

When you prepare for a family photoshoot, choose complementary colors rather than identical outfits for everyone. It adds variety, showcases the unique personality of every family members and most importantly, it keeps the photos from looking too staged.

Favor neutrals or soft tones if you can

Neutral colors like pastels photograph beautifully and avoid overpowering the image. But don’t worry: if this isn’t your style, bright and bold is also fine, it has to be you.

Comfort is key

Make sure everyone feels comfortable. If your clothes are too tight, too big or even itchy, you will keep adjusting them and it might show in the photos. We want you having fun, right?

Avoid large logos and patterns

They can be quite distracting and take the focus away from you in the photo. But then again, it’s important that you stick to what you usually like and the clothes you or your kids own.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME

Picking a time of day for you family photoshoot is important. The best time for your family will take into account a few things like:

When are you free?

We will work around your schedule, whether it’s after school, in the morning for breakfast on a winter day, or at golden hour in the summer.

When is your kid the most relaxed?

We don’t want your child to feel cranky if they missed naptime to be at their photoshoot, so we will accommodate your little one.

Try not to plan too many things

I know it’s difficult because as parents, our schedule tend to be packed, but try, if you can, to not schedule things too close to your session. If you have somewhere to be right after the photoshoot, you will feel rushed and stressed. Why not make it a special family day where you just relax before and after the session?

3. PREPARE YOUR KID

Children can feel overwhelmed at the idea of a photo session, no matter their age. Luckily, there are ways to help them feel relaxed and have a great time!

Tell them about the experience

Explain what will happen so they know what to expect. Make it sound fun and stress-free, let them know how much you love them!

Bring along their favorite toys and snacks

Having a favorite toy or comfort object can help them be at ease. If your photo session is at home it’s even easier! Don’t forget to feed them, a full belly equals a relaxed and happy kiddo.

Don’t stress perfection

What is perfection anyway, right? This is family! It’s chaos, it’s a mess sometimes and it’s also beautiful. This is why we like it so much: it’s an adventure. If kids act out or need a break, it’s okay I promise you, we will take the time. Pictures of Mama or Daddy comforting a grumpy little one are precious, too.

4. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Ok, so this one might seem obvious, but a well-rested family is a happy family. Make sure everyone, especially younger kids, gets plenty of rest the night before the shoot and that little ones have a nap. But I get it, this is easier said than done, and if you have a newborn, close to impossible. Just do your best, and it will be great!

5. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

This is probably the best way to prepare for your family photoshoot! I always have a good chat with the families I photograph before the session. We talk on the phone, exchange emails… It’s very important that I get to know you, because it will help me create the best images and experience for your family. As a bonus, you will also get to know me, and that’s important for you to feel at ease when we meet.

You can share your expectations, preferences, and any specific shots you’d love to capture. Every photographer is different and will provide you with their own advice based on the location, time, and light conditions. They usually have a lot of experience photographing families and you can trust their expertise to get the best results.

6. EMBRACE THE CHAOS

Family photoshoots rarely go exactly as planned, and that’s okay! I like to think this is part of the deal with family sessions, I love how it’s always an adventure. I believe the best photos come from candid moments and genuine interactions. Laugh, play, and enjoy the time together—those are the good times.

7. RELAX AND ENJOY

Remember, a family photoshoot is about capturing the love and connection within your family, and everything that makes it unique. Try not to stress too much about the details, and let me guide you through the process. Relax, be yourselves, and trust that the result will be a beautiful reflection of your family. Hold your children tight, breath in, breath out: this is a gift your are giving yourself.
