Kid-friendly family photo session: what parents really need to know
Family photo sessions can feel overwhelming, especially if your kids are energetic, shy, or easily distracted. What if the day could actually be fun, relaxed, and stress-free for everyone? That’s exactly what a kid-friendly family photo session is all about: capturing real, joyful moments without asking anyone to act or hold a pose.
With this approach, the focus is on your child’s comfort, your family’s natural rhythm, and creating memories you’ll treasure for years to come.
What makes a family photo session truly kid-friendly?
A kid-friendly session is designed to fit around your child, not the other way around. It’s all about:
- Respecting their moods and energy
- Allowing them to explore and play naturally
- Following their lead rather than imposing poses
- Making parents feel relaxed and part of the moment
“We really enjoyed the whole experience. The kids were relaxed throughout, and Aurélie is so professional and such a lovely person too.”
“My two young girls felt like we were just having a fun day at the beach, and this resulted in the most wonderful, carefree, natural family photos.”

Will my child enjoy it?
Every child is different, some are outgoing, some shy, some full of energy. A kid-friendly photographer knows how to meet children where they are, gently inviting them to engage without pressure.
“My 4-year-old boy connected with Aurélie straight away and felt very comfortable.
She was so patient with a slightly cranky 2-year-old who wasn’t very willing at the start of the session. The photos exceeded our expectations, the cranky toddler was captured in such an amazing way!”
The key is to make your child feel safe, respected, and free to be themselves. When that trust is in place, the magic happens naturally and kids have the best time!

How do you involve children without forcing them?
With years of experience photographing families, and as a mom of three myself, I know just how to make children want to be involved, without ever forcing them. Before the session, I chat with you about your kids’ personalities and preferences. On the day, I offer games and activities that fit them perfectly, naturally sparking their curiosity and excitement to take part.
During my family photo sessions, children are never forced to pose or perform. Gentle prompts, like reading a story or giving a sibling a hug, are always optional. If a child says no, we simply move on to something else. Respecting their boundaries creates trust and authentic moments.
“Aurélie made a real effort to understand what my kids enjoy doing so that the day of the shoot ran very smoothly.”

Photos that truly reflect your child’s happiness
Kid-friendly sessions are all about real emotions, curiosity, and play, not cheezy smiles. Parents often tell me that the photos feel like a window into the real life of their family.
“Such a lovely experience, everything felt so natural and truly captured the joy and fun of the kids!”
“The children fully engaged with the session, resulting in natural, emotional photos that we’ll always look back on with joy.”
Even little quirks and habits that fade as children grow are preserved in these photos: priceless memories for years to come.
“My 3-year-old still talks to this day about ‘the lady that came to take pictures in our house,’ sincere proof of the unforgettable moment we all shared.”

Is a kid-friendly family photo session right for your family?
If you want:
- Your children to enjoy the experience without stress
- Photos that reflect your family’s real life
- Memories that capture genuine joy and personality
…then yes! Kid-friendly sessions are especially good for families with younger children, shy kids, or those who have struggled with traditional photography.
“The best part was that we just had to be ourselves: walking in our favorite park, St Stephen’s Green, and playing with our daughter like a Saturday afternoon.”
“Aurélie is amazing with children, easy to approach, incredibly patient, and very warm.”

Beautiful portraits without posing
Many parents wonder if a kid-friendly session — where children lead and aren’t pressured to pose — can still produce beautiful, frame-worthy portraits. The answer is YES! By capturing your children naturally, in moments of play, curiosity, and genuine emotion, the images often feel even more timeless and authentic than traditional posed photos.
All of my family photography collections include a print credit, so you can turn your favourite moments into prints, albums, or wall art. Families often tell me they have trouble choosing what to print because they love all of the photos! These sessions don’t just give you photos for social media, they give you heirlooms to treasure for years.
“My baby was taking her first steps, and it was one of my best memories of the year! She was so sweet and made us feel at ease, it felt so natural — and the photos are just stunning!”

How do you handle babies or toddlers taking naps or having meltdowns?
We plan the session at a time of day that works best for your child, taking into account naps and meal times to ensure their well-being.
If a feeding or a snack is needed, we take a short pause, no rush at all. And if tears, a little bump, or an emotional moment occur, parents take the time to comfort their child. These authentic moments of parenting are also documented, and often turn out to be some of the most powerful and beautiful images of the session. Your child will love looking back on them when they’re all grown up!

Do we need to prepare anything in advance?
Minimal preparation is needed! I discuss your child’s preferences and personality beforehand. On the day, I bring ideas of games and prompts that fit your family with what we have on hand, so everyone is relaxed and ready to have fun. We’ll let your child pick their favourite book if we’re at home or choose the path they want to explore if we’re outdoors.
