Documentary family portraits

Documentary family portraits bring a refreshing and authentic approach to the world of family photography.
Unlike the traditional posed portraits most of today’s parents used to know when they were kids, this style captures the essence of family life, in a relaxed and genuine way. You might even have pretty awkward memories of the one-size-fits-all, old school photo sessions you had as a child (I know I do). But thank goodness, it doesn’t have to be like that anymore!
If you’re looking to create timeless and heartfelt keepsakes of your family, here’s why documentary family portraits might be the perfect choice for you.

What are documentary family portraits?

Documentary family portraits focus on capturing candid moments and real-life interactions rather than stiff poses and forced smiles.
This photography style aims to tell the story about your family’s unique dynamics, the love you share, and your life as it is. From a quiet moment of reading together, to playing in the backyard, or sharing a meal, documentary photography celebrates the everyday moments that make your family unique (because no one does these things exactly like you do, we all add our special little twists on the mundane to make it our own).

The benefits of a documentary approach

It’s genuine

One of the main advantages of documentary family portraits is the authenticity they convey. By allowing your family to interact naturally, your photographer can capture real emotions and bonds that reflect your family’s true personality.
You can enjoy photographs of real places you’ve lived in or been to, and you can remember the things you used to do together. Children grow up so fast, and you will treasure seeing images of every seasons of their childhood with documentary portraits.

It’s stress-free

Posed portraits can often be overwhelming, especially for adults and children who may feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. A documentary approach creates a more relaxed environment, allowing everyone to be themselves, leading to a more enjoyable and effortless moment. Reportage photo sessions are great because you don’t have to stand still and look at the camera. Most families even end up forgetting they are being photographed after a few minutes because they engage in activities they enjoy!

It’s timeless

Unlike traditional posed portraits, which can feel outdated over time, documentary family portraits are timeless. Sure, you’ll be able to tell when the photos are from just by looking at the furniture or the clothes, just like we do when we see pictures of our parents from the 80’s. But the bonds of a family are timeless. Parents will always take care of children, and kids will always play and need hugs and snacks. Documentary photography lets people be themselves, and that never gets old.

Tips for a successful documentary family portrait session

Choose a meaningful location

Consider having your session at a place that your family holds dear, whether it’s your home, your favorite park, or a local beach. Familiar surroundings will help everyone feel at ease and the photos will have great value to you and your kids for the years to come. You might want to read more about choosing a location with my guides to outdoor sessions and in home sessions.

Engage in activities

Plan simple activities that your family loves! Baking, playing games, exploring nature, reading a book… These activities are opportunities for real, authentic interactions that your photographer will capture. When you get to be yourselves in the photos, they will resonate with you.

Dress comfortably

Choose outfits that reflect your family’s style and habits, and make everyone feel comfortable. Avoid overly formal clothing that might make you feel stiff or awkward during the session. When it comes to planning what to wear, I like to give the advice that it should make sense to you now, and in twenty years’ time when you see your photos. You can read more about how to dress for a photoshoot.

Welcome the unplanned

Embrace the spontaneity of family life. I always let kids be kids! Some of the best moments happen when you least expect them, so let go and enjoy the moment. There is no such thing as planning when you’re a parent, right ? If your child cries, it’s alright, you can comfort and hug him, and you’ll have beautiful keepsakes of a real, emotional moment. Anything that’s part of your life deserves to be part of your family portraits, too. You can read more about preparing your child for a session.
